A personal memoir by Hon K. Lee describing his adventures growing up in New York's Chinatown; being a combat Marine; running CIA clandestine operations; teaching Chinese martial arts; and treating patients with Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

His story begins with Lee as a scrawny runt in a Chinese immigrant family. He gets bullied so often he yearns to be like the kung fu heroes he sees in the movies. He becomes a Marine to prove himself, but the horrors of war make him wonder what it would take to achieve peace. He joins the CIA’s clandestine service, only to see his career threatened in an ordeal that makes him reevaluate his life purpose, leading him to chase his dream to study Chinese medicine. Along the way, he apprentices with top martial arts masters, and opens a school to pass on what he’s learned.

In this straightforward, often humorous memoir Lee narrates his adventures from the streets of Chinatown to the battlefields of Vietnam, and from the corridors of CIA headquarters to the acupuncture clinics of Shanghai.
While his journey seems to take divergence paths, those familiar with stories about the knights of ancient China will recognize he’s travelling a singular path – a four-fold one of Scholar Warrior Teacher Healer, with Spy thrown in.

I have known Hon for over five years (met him in Minneapolis with the Spring Forest Qigong training.) Hon has always impressed me as being a notably outstanding and impressive human being - highly distinguished and intelligent, composed with an undercurrent of humor and I am proud to consider him a friend. It is with joy that I have just finished enjoying his wonderful memoir (which I recommend without reservation to anyone called to sharing in his life adventures.) Wow. What an amazing and fascinating life. I think I read it mainly because of my love and respect for Hon, but it opened new doors for me. Hon has had amazing experiences, that without having read his memoir, I would never have been introduced to in the same way. CIA spy experiences, war experiences, all the cool martial arts stuff and then of course his experiences in areas more familiar to me, Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture and healing. I feel that I now know/understand Hon better and my own experiences of life feel as though they have expanded by traveling vicariously with him through his memoir. Thanks, Hon, for sharing who you are with the world and for all you do.

I just finished reading Hon Lees memoir and if I had to describe it in one word it would be captivating. Hon had one of the most extraordinary life experiences I have known.
I met Hon Lee in Medical Qi Gong school and he was a humble man who would always be the first one to help a fellow student whenever needed. Having many lunches together he would tell little stories about himself growing up in Chinatown but none about his CIA career or even the extent of his Military career. I was glued to this book thinking there was so much to learn about him.
I enjoyed every moment of reading this book and encourage others to read it and find out what this fine, upstanding person had done with his wonderful life.
Please note that all the proceeds of this book with be donated to wounded warriors and their families! What a wonderful man you are Hon Lee!
As a reader with diverse cultural background and interests, reading Mr. Lee's memoir was very engaging and inspirational. I read it slowly over time, during my commute to work, which worked well for me because throughout the book there are many bits of wisdom that took time to digest and appreciate. Mr. Lee is patriotic, courageous, adventurous, selfless, brilliant, and a true overachiever. The book has bits of humor throughout, where I laughed out loud while reading, because of the subtlety of humor and the interesting titbits he encountered in everyday events.

In the book, Mr. Lee breezed through many aspects of his training and hard work to attain his current level of mastery in the various interests he had outside of his career; I believe this was done to avoid making the book too long and dry, as not everyone appreciates all the gory details of the effort it takes to be a master in martial arts, AND a medical doctor. As a student from the same schools of martial arts, I can confidently say that EACH ONE of his expertise can take decades, sometimes a lifetime, of dedication to achieve the level of mastery that he has. What's impressive is that he did all these in parallel to his career advancements!

In summary, this book is a true source of inspiration and I believe by the time you reach the last chapter, you will be actively seeking and following at least one of the paths that Mr. Lee has travelled. My only remaining thought is that, I wished I had known Mr. Lee a few decades earlier.
A fascinating memoir, using "flashbacks" and prominent vignettes. This is an account of a journey, originating in New York's Chinatown, with stops at the U.S. Marine Corps, Vietnam, the CIA, and exotic locales along the way. The narrative is driven by the author's love of risk-taking, his attraction to challenges, and his sometimes surprising career choices. Author Hon Lee does not fit into any mold. He is frank, honest, and introspective. The book should be a source of encouragement for younger people to follow their dreams and to those pondering major life changes.
I devour books the way some people eat candy, yet there are times when I run across a book that makes me slow down and savor the experience; “Paths Less Traveled of a Scholar, Warrior (spy) Teacher, Healer A personal Memoir by Hon K. Lee, is one such book.
Many autobiography’s or memoirs are… to put it kindly, dry – and not in the humorous way. Lee has a different way of presenting his life, an almost humble approach that pulls few punches and flows easily from page to page. Born on the auspicious Chinese Holiday Double Ten, or October 10th, Lee’s parents naturally believed that their first generation (On his Mother’s side) American son was destined for great things. They were right, just maybe not quite the way they thought. From the rough streets of New York in the 1950’s – made even tougher by being Chinese American – through the Marines to the CIA before he comes home to become a Martial Arts Teacher and Chinese Healer. The path(s) are divergent and strange, often times funny and all together unique. Lee takes chances, there is no doubt about that, and he has lived a life that has found him in odd places (Mazetland – I had to look it up!) yet has somehow brought him to, in his own words, “A Happy Place.”
Amazing and inspiring, this memoir is everything you want a memoir to be. Non-braggadocios and straight forward, yet compact enough to enjoy in an afternoon or two.
