Recipient of the Romance Writers of America RITA award as well as a rare 5 star review from Romantic Times magazine, Dragonslayer is the story of a minister who has lost his faith in God and a woman who, despite being surrounded by poverty and gang violence, has never lost her faith in humanity or the Corners, the inner city neighborhood where she grew up.
Thomas Stonehill and Garnet Anthony couldn't be more different, ice to fire, but both are determined to make the Corners a neighborhood where residents will be safe to enjoy a wealth of opportunities. After a personal tragedy Thomas, once the minister of a megachurch, forms a ragtag congregation in an abandoned store, despite his own doubts that God listens or cares. Garnet, a nurse, runs a maternal health clinic that she's carved from nothing.
When warring gangs threaten Garnet's clinic and personal safety, Thomas takes action to protect her, despite his conviction that he must remain a man apart. Neither of them is prepared for the startling outcome.
Reviewer Melinda Helfer, of Romantic Times (now RT Book Reviews) wrote "Innovative plots can often open gateways for an author, but they can never take the place of the human experience that the very best books bring to our hearts."
Dragonslayer blends romance, women's and inspirational fiction. But most of all it's a novel about the human heart and the mysterious healing power of love.
Dragonslayer eBook Emilie Richards
Dragonslayer by Emilie Richards was a book that I loved from beginning to end. This was a book that was first published in 1993 and won the RITA in the USA in 1994. Very well deserved I would say. Emilie Richards has now republished this book, updating it no doubt, because it fits very well in today's world. A timeless story. I am just grateful that she has republished it and that has made it available for me to read.It is a powerful, emotional life affirming book. It totally captivated me. I loved the characters, the pacing, the complex issues that it tackles. It is a multi-layered book, not just a simple romance.
Thomas is a pastor in a tough area. He is a strong but tortured man. Very well able to handle himself in the gang infested environment yet with a caring if lost heart and soul. He has lost his faith and his meaning in life. Immediately I was intrigued and was longing to know his back story, which did unfold to my great satisfaction as the book moved along.
Garnet is quite the opposite to Thomas, she has grown up in this area and also has a back story that makes her really interesting. Now she works as a nurse/director of a small endeavour to help mothers bring their children safely into the world and hopefully keep them that way. Garnet is strong and tough, a go-getter. She believes she knows the gang members and will be relatively safe on the streets. She is full of life, dresses in warm bright attire and exudes energy and life.
When the two meet they clash, in good ways and a relationship springs up that tests them both and eventually leads to something wonderful. But first they must make the journey and that is a whole books worth of happenings.
This book spoke to my heart and soul. One I savoured and relished.

Dragonslayer eBook Emilie Richards Reviews
I received the book as a gift from Emilie Richards. She has always been one of my favorite authors and she did not disappoint me with Dragonslayer. Although it was published in the 1990's, it is a story that is still pertinent in today's world. The characters are realistic with Thomas Stonehill featured as a minister questioning his own belief and starting a new church in a neighborhood where gangs are trying to take over. Garnet Anthony runs a mother and child clinic in Corners where she grew up and is determined to fight for the area that she remembers. The story line includes character conflict within themselves and each other, community power play, romance, and resolution. I enjoyed it very much.
Thomas Stonehill is a minister who has lost his faith, he despises himself and is a tortured soul. Garnet Anthoony says what she thinks and does what she wants. She will fight everything that stands between her and what she thinks her neighborhood should be. She finds herself in trouble with the local gangs and Thomas steps up and protects her. Over time they conquer the emotional barriers. The friendship and love crept slowly for these two. This is an oldie but goodie (originally released in 1993)– the story still relates to times today.
I received this book as a gift from the author, Emilie Richards and am voluntarily reviewing it.
This book was fantastic, and even though it was first published in 1993, it is totally relevant to the present time. An underpopulated area that once thrived has become inundated with two gangs, the MidKnights and the Coroners, whose path of death and destruction make it a dangerous place. Buildings and land have not been taken care of and graffiti is everywhere. Reverend Thomas Stonehill is trying to make a difference with his small congregation at the Church of the Samaritan. His past influenced him, and instead of being able to resolve his own weaknesses, the town is blessed with his word. He wants to make the Corners a better place to live.
Garnet Anthony, a nurse practitioner, runs Mother and Child, a health care and social services facility for women and children living in the Corners. She is determined to live at the Corners for the rest of her life, no matter what happens to her. As both Thomas and Garnet work together to try and improve life in the Corners, many stumbling blocks occur that slow down their progress.
This heart wrenching story was powerful, and the genius behind the words grabbed me from the start and did not let up until the end. It is an action-packed, truthful look at hard times where people not only want to make a difference, but also give it their all to try and make it happen. I loved it. [I received this book as a gift from the author, Emilie Richards.]
Emilie Richards always meets or exceeds my expectations.
Good story about imperfect believers who learn redemption is by God's grace alone.
Thoroughly enjoyable. I didn't want to put it down. The subject was a bit different than usual but totally relevant to the times.
I recently purchased a copy of this book and really enjoyed it. I have to admit the title was something that put me off originally. I guess I didn't "get" what it meant and wasn't attracted to it but, after reading it, understood the title better.
As usual, Emilie Richards nails the various aspects of each character, which I think is a rare talent. This book gave me a deeper understanding of the angst a member of clergy feels and how difficult it must be to try to be what each person needs from him or her.
I didn't think I would like reading about gang influences but found I could see how that could be an attraction. Good, thoughtful read.
